We have now reviewed our promise and with the help of our care leavers we have identified a set of pledges:
Care Leaver Pledges 2024/25
Here at St Helens MBC, we pledge to our care leavers that we will:
-
act in your best interests at all times
-
treat you as an adult and with respect. We will ‘work with’, not ‘do to’ you
-
encourage you to express your views, wishes and feelings and fully respect these
-
help you lead a happy, healthy, adult life
-
help you find somewhere stable to live once you are an adult
-
help you to continue with your interests and hobbies
-
promote high aspirations for you and help you develop your skills and confidence
-
help support you with any challenges you face
-
help you understand your experiences and to help prepare you for adulthood
-
be available to help support you
To do this we will:
-
build a relationship with you based on trust and mutual respect
-
maintain contact with you in a way that suits you
-
make sure you are aware of your rights and entitlements as a care leaver
-
listen your wishes and feelings, both individually and as a group, acting on what you say
-
support you to maintain contacts with family and friends
-
provide opportunities for you to help develop our service
-
work with other agencies to help you feel safe and supported
-
help you find opportunities for education, training, and employment
-
work with accommodation providers to help you find somewhere safe to live that you can call home
-
provide an ‘open door’ at our hub, or by phone, email, Instagram etc and never turn you away no matter how old you are. We are 'always here'
-
give you advice and help you develop the skills you need to live independently
-
help you be involved in your local community
-
celebrate your successes and achievements
-
maintain links with family and friends and help you develop support networks
-
support you to become independent of us
-
support you to lead a healthy lifestyle and make your own, informed choices
-
never criticise you if things go wrong, and always look for positive solutions in any situation
These pledges have been updated with the help of our care leavers. If you would like to help shape the future of our service, please come to one of our forums, speak to your PA or email: futuresteamfeedback@sthelens.gov.uk

In addition to our pledges, St Helens makes a ‘Promise’ to all of our Looked After Children and Care Leavers to say what we are going to do for you. Our Care Leavers Group and Children In Care Council wrote down all of the important things that they felt St Helens as your Corporate Parent should do for you.
Your Corporate Parents then told you all the ones that they are able to promise to do and this creates the ‘Promise’.
